今もあこがれ、そしてとてもなれないことを悟りつつ,尊敬する。
ここで、氏の居られる時に幸運にも在職した私なりの人物像を書き加えておきたい。
今ではDOHCや高性能4ス トロークエンジンなどの数々の高い技術に,技術者としての、崇高さをのみ語られることが多いが, 私から見たらそんなのは当然の結果であって,大事なこと が伝えられていないと思う。 本田宗一郎の考え方と心である。 これが一番のことだ.
私が、宗一郎さんの名前を知ったのは小学生ではなく多分中学生の頃だと思う。 毎朝、中学に向かうときCS92が毎日走りぬけて勤め先に向かう後姿からバイクに興味が向き始めたのと同時であっ た。 新聞でもTTレースが..と記事が出ていた時代だ.

宗一郎さんは常々バイクの楽しさを知らしめる,と言うより分かってもらうことで知らしめると考えていた に違いない。 （中学生の私でさえなんとなくそういうことは考えもしなかったが知っていた。）
たとえば、東京近郊に多摩テックをオープンし,バイクを30円か50円で乗せてくれたのである。 日 曜日にはモトクロスレースを開いたりして。 cz100やス-パ-カブ、スポーツカブ,特に遠心クラッチのc111は始めてのバイクを体験する中学生には嬉しかった。 同じように、鈴鹿や,朝霞にも楽しい乗り場を作った..
また全国の中学校にスポーツカブやスーパーカブを贈ったのだ. これで、僕らは社会科で,バイクの分 解を見たりする経験を得ることが出来たのである。こうして自然とバイクの社会性も理解され始めた.
またすこし後にだが、秋田県で個人でエンジンを研究する大西氏(大西エンジン)にポケットマネーから 援助もしていたそうだ。 小さなメーカーも町工場も一緒に競争して,日本をバイクを盛り上げようと言う大きな心の持ち主であったこ とを示す分かりやすい事例である。 （この時代,研究所ではcvccに始まる関連研究を全力投球していた時代で,大西エンジンの成果を横取りしようとか言 うケチな計算などでは勿論無かったし、事実研究所ではアレは？？だと判断していた個人レベルの研究であったのにだ.）
また当時バイクといえば,アメリカでは暴力系の人のノリモノとしてとらえられ使われていた。本田宗一郎 は素敵な人（ナイセストピ−プルnicest people on a honda) ホンダに乗るという世界キャペーンを打って,たのしい乗 りもののハーモニーを目指したのである。
こうした考えは後にcvccに始まる排気環 境や,安全思想の技術に成長したのはいうまでも無い。
この大きな,やさしい心の、持ち主が本田宗一郎であったということを是非記憶に入れて欲しい.
そう知ると、鈴鹿サーキットの出現や,リトルホンダ、アイデアコンテスト…全バイクの4ストローク化、OHC化... などなど、また 謎解きのカギが見えてこよう。

私自身の研究所時代には、お見掛けもし、見えるとドラフターの影から,鉛筆を削る振りをしては見ていた 落ち着かない私だった。 それほど雲の上の人であった。正月開けには所員への深く考え抜かれ未来を直感を含め見ぬかれた、ありがたいお話を食堂で聞けるよ うな時代に在所できたのはなんとも幸運であった。
独立して、ある日ついに、秘faxが届き、私は一日気が抜けたうつろ な詩人のようになってしまった。 そして青山でのお別れの日(お礼の日)、大きなご尊顔の写真が私にはこう語ってくれた. 俺なんかもう居なくなっちゃた んだから,自分の力で自由に生きてやっていけと。. 悲しいけどそう心から思えて,氏をイメージし、今もエネルギーを貰ってやっているのです。そこまで させ得る人物なのです.

ところで、応援してくれただろうな こと‘ とはバイクで言えば,私達はいつもずーっとバイクの楽しさを広げ,バイクの楽しさ思い 起こさせるものをやってきている。結果として,バイクの世界が広がり、当然ホンダのバイクも売れる地合になる性質のものをやり続けている事だ。 エンジンはホンダが供給してくれれば、かならずホンダのエンジンを使うこともしている。（残念ながら,大会社すぎる今は,時々の担当者により左右される購 入できないことも起きているが。。) これは私が本田宗一郎で育ったからこそ知り得る多くの理由から来ている自然の結果なのだ。
